LAST ISSUE WE INVITED PUZZLER PLAYERS to ponder: “Celebrations are planned next year for the centenary of this writer’s birth. His quintessential story of Cotswold/English village life on the cusp of change has been popular for a generation–but one accomplishment of this nature poet and naturalist.”

Writer and naturalist Laurie Lee made his home in the Cotswolds, and captured the unique rhythms of life in its hills and villages in the reflective memoir Cider with Rosie, published in 1956. The story of long-past innocence in a simpler time has been a much-beloved, quiet classic ever since.

And now puzzle this: I loved to sit around the coffeehouses of London just to hear him talk. I also traveled with him on an arduous adventure to the Western Isles. And, with all due, modesty, my book about him helped make him famous, and me.

events worth a detour!

Planning a trip to Britain this summer? There is always a festival or a sporting event worth checking out in the area.

Glastonbury Festival June 25-29
Britain’s most popular music gathering, Glastonbury’s stage draws Woodstock-like crowds to Worthy Farm for its festival of “contemporary performing arts.” You’ll not get tickets for 2014; they sold out on October 6. On the other hand, you may want to avoid that part of Somerset for a few days.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week Festival June 28-July 6
If you need a reason to visit the gorgeous southwest corner of Wales, the annual seafood festival with fish & frolics and fish fare galore offers a wonderful mix of local color, tradition and the best from the sea.

Henley Royal Regatta July 2-6
The world’s best-known regatta is also a highlight of the English sporting calendar and social season. Mingle with the rowers and the straw-boater crowd on the river at Henley-on-Thames for more than 200 races on the famous stretch of waterway.
